Steve Alper’s first novel, The Steam, is an emotionally gut-wrenching story about a man battling his gambling addiction in order to save himself and his family. With bookies out for blood and nowhere to turn, Tom Freedman is lured into a partnership with a corrupt game-fixing basketball referee... a partnership that could cost Tom his life.
Written prior to the real-life Tim Donaghy ref scandal, The Steam is an undeniable testament to the author’s keen insight into the worlds of sports gambling, addiction and crime. More than prophetic, The Steam is a novel that captivates from page one and never lets go.

After the 1st couple chapters, only then did I realize this wasn't based on a true story. Excellent story, writing, and everything else. Makes you think twice before gambling with bar room bookies, thats for sure.Product details

The Steam edition by Steve Alper Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed reading it.. It is very captivating
Wow, this book is really interesting in that it's about an addicted gambler guy who gets involved with a crooked NBA ref. Sound familiar? The Tim Donaghy scandal happened after this was written. Really wild. I wonder if it shows some of the real-life ways Donaghy worked the system.
It's a pretty tough, gritty book sometimes, but I guess that's the world of gambling and addiction.
I liked it though and think it's a good read, especially if you like sports/gambling/basketball etc. or know someone who does...and believes in conspiracy theories. There are a few great twists, too, that make it pretty fun.
Page turner from start to finish! If you want to enter the dirty world of illegal sports gambling, this is a sure-fire thriller!
